Background

Ellen Reid was born "Cecilia", but was given the name Ellen when her mother put her up for adoption after a series of incidents in her hometown of Doolin caused her mother to decide it was best for her daughter if she left. As a child she had a dear friend who was ill-- in an attempt to save him, she was told that she could pray to the faeries and that they might save him. However, instead, she was nearly killed. Her friend, knowing his days were numbered, gave his life to save her. The townspeople however became wary of Ellen and blamed her for the boy's sudden death without knowing the entire story. They confronted her, but Ellen didn't know either. To protect her child, Ellen's mother killed them and then sent her child somewhere safe, where no one needed to know of those events.

Even Ellen would forget what really happened. But she never stopped thinking of her mother. At the age of 22, she returned to Doolin despite warnings that the place was cursed, because a letter from her "mother" called her there. The letter was a fake, and she was drawn back into the town's story. But through that she learned the truth of her past and confronted even the Netherworld itself. Not alone, though. She had the help of a unique and cynical occult reporter with his own strange history poking his nose into the backstory alongside her. While he had his own reasons for going along with it, he did find himself with a strange compulsion to keep her safe on several different occasions despite it not being advisable. It's thanks to him and the townspeople that the story was finally able to come to a close and Ellen was able to get her sense of closure.

Personality

Ellen is a quiet girl with a burning passion that drives her to be strong and independent in spite of the crippling vulnerability she feels in her loneliness and uncertainty. The unknown scares her and yet she dives headfirst into it to find answers despite knowing that the answers she finds may only serve to hurt her more. Numerous times she uncovers information that terrifies her, but she refuses to go back. Even when it means questioning herself, she has to know the truth and won't be satisfied until she knows just what happened all those years ago in her forgotten childhood.

She's a kind person, although one that is perhaps a bit socially awkward. While she has her own concerns and things she needs to do, she does what she can to help others along the way. Having the support of other people really means a lot to her, and it's when she can go from acting alone to working with others that she starts to get to the heart of the issue.
